While house calls seem like a thing of the past, the many advancements of portable medical technology have made this practice viable in the 21st century. A recent study from the journal Health Affairs reported that home visit programs for Medicare beneficiaries have benefited patients and physicians alike.
The study found that at-home care is especially helpful for patients who are elderly or have conditions that complicate travel. It allows them to access quality care with less risk, fewer expenses and a higher quality of life.
Because these visits give physicians and nurses a more complete understanding of their patients, it also improves overall quality of care while achieving dramatic savings and reducing the incidence of hospital and nursing home admission.
