A new study by the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council shows that hospitals can save millions in expenses by lowering readmission rates.
In the past five years, Pennsylvania hospitals were able to prevent unnecessary hospitalizations and save nearly $700 million in costs. This contrasts the nearly 3,000 hospitals that will be penalized by Medicare in 2016 for having high readmission rates.
The study shows that fewer instances of infections, falls and adverse drug effects helped keep readmission rates low in Pennsylvania between 2009 and 2014. These hospitals were also able to reduce mortality rates for 10 common medical conditions.
